RUNE MASTERY RULES

Runes are the magical creation of the rune master, they are magical symbols that can be inscribed onto any solid object (Living, Dead, Never-Alive and Magical) to confer magical powers. Characters that practice rune mastery are able to identify these runes and are well versed in the effects of different runes.

The property of the object the rune master wishes to imbue is very important as not all runes can be engraved onto all types of objects. There are four types of properties Living, Magical, Dead and Never alive. Living is any thing that is still alive and breathing i.e. Skin, Bark, Hair etc. Dead Substances are anything that once was living like a corpse or an axe handle or even paper. Never alive substances (which are the easiest and most common objects to imbue) are things that have never been alive such as steel, stone, glass etc. Magical substances are any substance that has been imbued with magic or is inherently magical such as Warpstone or Unicorn Horn etc.

NB: Any person/race that is born with magic points is counted as naturally magical (i.e. a magic substance). Magic points gained AFTER birth do not count as naturally magic (i.e. NOT a magical substance).

Will Power

A Rune Master can always use his own runes regardless of the usual WP cost.

A Rune Master can use his Rune Mastery level instead of his Will Power Level to use runed items inscribed by another Rune Master.

A person without the Rune Mastery skill can only use the Rune if his Will Power level is higher than that of the runes.

A runes Will Power rank is worked out as:

Rune Level divided by 2, rounding down, then minus 1.

Thus, a rank 8 rune would have a willpower level of

  8

  2 - 1 = a willpower level of 3

The Process of Rune Mastery

This section details the process a rune master must follow for every rune he wishes to employ.

Step 1 - Decide which rune you wish to employ.

To inscribe a rune the rune master must first select a rune that is his own level or lower and inscribe it onto any solid surface.

Step 2 - Locate a suitable object to put your runes on.

It should be noted that some runes may not be inscribed onto some object types, Living, Dead or Never Alive.

Step 3 – Cleanse the item

The object now needs to be cleansed ready for imbuing with a special ritual.

See the ritual of cleansing below

Step 4 – Inscribe the rune

Draw the rune that you require onto the item you wish to imbue.

A Rune master can keep adding runes to an item up to his level (i.e. a level 3 Rune master can put only three runes on any item. If he filled this item and passed it to a level 5 rune smith the level 5 rune smith could add two more runes to his item.)

Step 5 - Infuse your Magic points into the rune and activate it.

Should the rune master inscribe more than his limit the Item can not be imbued. If the rune smith decides to enchant an item with more runes on it than his level all the Magic points he has employed are lost and the rune master will take a single through for every rune on the item as the runes mercilessly suck the energy from his body. This means that only High Level Runes Smiths can re-empower some of the most potent rune weapons.

Step 6 – Do you want the rune Permanent?

If you wish the rune to be permanent then the Rune Master puts 3 times the runes level in magic points and blood points permanently. E.g. to enchant a level 5 rune permanently would cost the Rune Master 15 magic points and 15 blood points.

NB: Permanent runes take 15mins /1 enc to recharge

Step 7 – Use the rune

Step 8 – Does the rune fade?

If the rune is non-permanent it will fade and disappear

If the rune is permanent it will dim.

Step 9 – Non-Permanent Runes dim

After an adventure all unused non-permanent runes fade and disappear.

The Ritual of Cleansing

So Why Do we need to Cleanse Before doing rune inscription?

Everything has an internal power and this needs to be purified to clean up all the pent up emotion and negative energy that has accumulated since it’s creation or the time is was last cleansed.

NB: An item that has been cleansed has all its ‘history’ wiped out. Which means that any spell or miracle cast on the item to learn its history will only pick up its history to the moment it was cleansed.

This process also identifies any runes already inscribed on an item. So could save the rune smith precious MP’s if there was a rune on the item that was above his level

This ritual is a cantrip that can be performed by anyone, at the cost of 2 Blood points (see Cantrip rule sin the Magic Rule Book).

Consecration of the Ritual Bath / Dip

Prepare by having a Candle, a suitable sized container of water (or water source, e.g. a river) and some earth or sand.

Take the candle, and make 3 slow passes above the water, Deosil (clockwise). As you do this say the following words,

'With this symbol of flame, this creature of Fire, Light and Warmth, do I purify this Ritual Bath. May all impurities flee before its power and light.'

Set aside the Candle (carefully!). Next take up the earth or sand and sprinkle three pinches into the water, saying as you do,

'With this symbol of Earth, this creature of Soil and Rock, do I purify this Ritual Bath. All creatures and thoughts impure may not approach it.'

Blow three times over the water, saying as you do,

'With this symbol of Air, this creature of Feather, Cloud and Wind, do I consecrate this Ritual Bath. May My hopes and aspirations rise upon the smoke to be carried upon the Winds to the Lady.'

Place the item in the water, whilst you do this say the following,

'With this symbol of Water, clean and pure and true, do I purify this ‘object’. May it contain the Waters of Life that spring eternal from the Heart of the Mother.'

Submerge item completely. Item is now purified.
